Chapter 1. Upgrading Linux distributions

This document describes how the tested distributions were upgraded during the Scratchbox distribution tests.


1.1. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 WS

Upgrading was done by using the graphical up2date tool. There were no problems in upgrade.

Upgrading RHEL requires purchase of the commercial license, and a registration to RHN (Red Hat Network). Start the registration and upgrade process by clicking on the upgrade icon "(!)" on the right bottom corner of the desktop panel.


1.2. Fedora Core 1

Upgrading was done by using the yum tool. There were no problems in upgrade.

With yum, the upgrade is done with the following command: yum update.

The update server path used was: baseurl=ftp://ftp.chl.chalmers.se/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/1/i386. The configuration file /etc/yum.conf contains the location of the update server.


1.3. Debian 3.0r2

The Debian installation was upgraded using the apt tool. There were no problems in upgrade.

The commands for upgrade are: apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade.

Apt uses configuration file /etc/apt/sources.list to determine which server(s) to use for upgrade. The update server path used was: deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US unstable/non-US main contrib non-free


1.4. Gentoo

The system was upgraded by issuing emerge system command. There were no problems in upgrade.


1.5. Mandrake

The system was upgraded by issuing urpmi --auto-update command. There were no problems in upgrade.


1.6. SuSe

YaST tool was used to upgrade the SuSe installation. There were no problems in upgrade.

The command to launch YaST is yast. Select "Software" and "Online Update" to begin the upgrade process.


1.7. Slackware

Slackware can not be upgraded from an online repository. Slackware cannot be upgraded without full reinstallation or by manual upgrading package by package.
